ShaggFest Artist Spotlight – Intalek

Artist Name

Intalek

Where are you from/where do you live now?

I’m a product of the world living in Virginia Beach, VA.

Musical Genre?

Hip Hop; Beach Flow

How would you describe your sound?

Mainly hip hop but occasionally everywhere.

Musical Influences?

It always varies. But the main ones as of now are Michael Jackson, James Brown, Jay-Z, The Fugees, and anything independent and striving with their own rendition of what musical art is for them personally.

Greatest accomplishment to date as an artist?

Being able to touch and move people through music. No award or accolade can top that.

If you could sign with any label, what would it be and why?

It would have to be G.O.O.D. Music or Stones Throw Records. It seems like they let you breathe creatively.

Dream collaboration and why?

Intalek featuring Lupe Fiasco and Andre 3000 (prod. by Andre 3000)…because that would be dumb insane.

Where do see yourself in 5 years?

Seeing the world, meeting people, shaking hands, performing, creating music and enjoying life doing what I love.

Why did you want to be a part of ShaggFest?

Shaggy has always been supportive of, not only myself but the local music scene. Whether it’s rock or rap or whatever, he’s always been someone that had an ear in the local music. I respect him and his drive and it’s an honor. He doesn’t get all the credit he deserves and people don’t really like him because of what they hear or see. With me being somewhat of a voice to the area’s hip hop, I feel as if I’m representing them all. We don’t have a large platform anyway, and with Shaggfest I get to represent them and show the people that Virginia’s hip hop scene is a thriving. So I wanted to be a part of the festival to show love to Shag and represent my people as well.

What are you most looking forward to about the experience?

All I’m looking forward to is a damn good time..

ShaggFest Artist Spotlight – Bison

Artist Name

BISON

Ben Hardesty- Vocals, Guitar, Percussion
Dan Hardesty- Banjo, Mandolin, Guitar, Vocals
Annah Hardesty- Bells, Percussion, Vocals
Andrew Benfante- Organ
Jay Benfante- Percussion
Amos Housworth- Cello
Teresa Totheroh- Violin

Where are you from/where do you live now?

Chesapeake, VA

Musical Genre?

We like to call it Mountain Top Chamber Music.  Some describe it as Folkestral.

Musical Influences?

There is definitely a roots music influence with artists like Allison Krauss or going further back, The Carter Family. We also listen to Edward Sharp, Fleet Foxes, Guster, Dodos, and the like. We draw heavily from a classical influence as well, and our song writing is influenced by cinematic soundtracks like that of Disney’s Bambi.

Greatest accomplishment to date as an artist?

Opening for the Avett Brothers at NTelos Pavilion (Portsmouth), and recently being offered a recording contract with Universal Republic.

If you could sign with any label, what would it be and why?

We love the homegrown indie feel of labels like Mom & Pop, but also appreciate the professional success and resources of large labels like Universal.  Universal would be on the top of our list.

Dream collaboration and why?

The London Philharmonic Orchestra or Bruce Springsteen because he is The Boss

Where do see yourself in 5 years?

Touring heavily worldwide, releasing our 3rd album while still creating new music, representing Virginia well, loving our family and friends, and Dan would like to write a book.

Why did you want to be a part of ShaggFest?

ShaggFest is a great opportunity to be a part of a local surge of original artists.  We love that it is a hybrid of genres and are eager to place our music in front of crowds who may not be familiar with Bison.

What are you most looking forward to about the experience?

The interaction with fellow artists and most importantly fans old and new.

Connect with Bison on Facebook, Twitter and Soundcloud.

Local Artist Eyerone Releases EP, In Vitro, Tuesday, May 8th

“I’m just a black man trying to see the light in the tunnel.” Local hip hop artist on the rise Eyerone (pronounced “Irony”) lives by this statement, having experienced his share of plights as both a person and an artist in Virginia’s music scene. His life stories culminate in his EP, In Vitro, being released and available for free HERE.

Born Tramel Spencer, the son of a Navy officer, Eyerone saw his years living overseas as an opportunity to broaden his perspectives on the human condition, using his move to Virginia as a means of developing his poetry into full-length songs. Influenced by the artists from his state (Timbaland, Missy Elliot, SkillzThe Clipse) as well as 80’s-90’s east coast rap, mid-90’s west coast rap, and the midwest, Eyerone seeks to deliver clever wordplay and storytelling to relate to the “Average Joe” while maintaining a commercial feel.

In Vitro touches on themes of struggling to maintaining money and attaining fame, debt and gratitude, growing older and apart from old friends, superficiality, the challenges of an up and coming VA artist, and the belief in one’s self.

Already receiving acclaim are “Unfamiliar Places,” produced by Chemist Productions, and “Debt,” produced by Lokey. Eyerone is slated to release his album, Rhyme and Reason, this November.
